The career of cyclist Wesley Kreder has come to an end. The 32-year-old Dutch cyclist, a member of the Cofidis team, suffered a heart attack while sleeping at the end of August. His family provided initial aid, and he was quickly hospitalized at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. Fortunately, Wesley regained consciousness the next day.
The cause of his heart failure is an inflamed heart muscle and pericardium. This inflammation is typically caused by a virus. Kreder initially wanted to return to the peloton as soon as possible but has now decided differently following advice from his doctor.
“After my heart attack, I told myself I could return to a high level, but my doctor assured me that quitting was the best and wisest solution. I understand the sacrifices and the level required to perform at this level.”
“It wasn’t an easy decision, but when I look at my children and family, I know I did the right thing. I had a great career, and I want to remember the positives. Now, I will spend more time with my kids and my wife as a family. I will wait a bit before seeking a new job. I hope my story serves as a lesson that life is too short not to be enjoyed. That’s what I’m going to do now,” Kreder concluded.
