Ilan van Wilder became the first Belgian since Eddy Merckx to win Tre Valli Varesine and, at the same time, managed to beat Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, and many others. Naturally, he was asked about the issue involving his team, Soudal Quick-Step, and the Belgian didn’t mince words with his criticism.
It was a very significant victory, which will undoubtedly give van Wilder more freedom next weekend at Il Lombardia, where he is expected to share the leadership with Remco Evenepoel. Soudal Quick-Step is currently in a unique situation as it may merge with Jumbo-Visma, but as part of the team, the Belgian left a clear message.
Van Wilder speaks out
“I dedicate this victory to all my teammates. We just want this stuff to stop, and we want to continue as Soudal Quick-Step. We are strong enough on our own,” he said. He has a contract with the team and his own personal goals, but his future is uncertain. Nonetheless, this is a victory that makes his end of the season a significant success.
