Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious), after being part of a breakaway with Remco Evenepoel, finished in second place in the eighteenth stage of the Vuelta a España, even though he crossed the finish line almost 5 minutes behind the Belgian champion. “It was a tough day,” Caruso began, recounting his adventure with the World Time Trial Champion. “Everyone knew Remco was the strongest in the leading group. He proved that as well. Of course, he deserves the win. For me, this second place – behind a champion like him – means a lot. I’m satisfied. I couldn’t have done more.”

What was it like to follow Evenepoel today? “Following him is like following a scooter. His pace was too high for me, but also for many, many other riders. That’s okay.”
