After the cardiac problem that led to a serious car accident, Nathan Van Hooydonck received some terrible news: he won’t be able to continue his professional cycling career with the most successful team of 2023.
Now, the Belgian cyclist faces another personal drama as he still had a contract with Jumbo-Visma until 2024. What will happen now that he can no longer race?
UCI rules stipulate that Jumbo-Visma can terminate Van Hooydonck’s contract. This clause is standard in any cyclist’s contract. Auke Broex, who is responsible for human resources at Jumbo-Visma, explains the situation to the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. “Unfortunately, it is certain that Nathan will not be part of our team as a cyclist. This is not possible and not allowed. He will no longer receive a license and is no longer eligible to be an athlete.”
Broex emphasizes that within Jumbo-Visma, they want to handle everything with Van Hooydonck in the best possible way. “The situation is very recent. We will try to resolve this in the best possible way with Nathan and his agent. We want to emphasize that. We are currently discussing this.”
New Role at Jumbo-Visma
Teammate Tiesj Benoot sees Van Hooydonck playing a different role in cycling. “Nathan was made to become a team leader. He reads the race very well and always makes the right decisions in the finale. I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns to work with the team later on.”
