Since Saturday, there has been a lot of discussion about Cian Uijtdebroeks’ move from BORA-hansgrohe to Jumbo-Visma. The two WorldTeams are currently engaged in discussions about the young climber, but Uijtdebroeks plans to join the Training Camp of his likely future employer in Dénia, Spain, this Tuesday.
“The team is starting the Training Camp. And we presented Cian as our newest member, so yes. He will be with us,” said a member of Jumbo-Visma to Cyclingnews.
The Dutch squad, set to be known as Visma-Lease a Bike in 2024, announced on Saturday that they had signed a four-year contract with Uijtdebroeks. However, his current team, Bora-Hansgrohe, quickly denied the move, stating that the cyclist has a contract with them until the end of 2024.
Rider’s management company confirms the transfer
Uijtdebroeks’ new management company, A&J All Sports, later released a statement via Instagram, claiming that the Belgian’s contract with the German team was terminated on December 1st, freeing him to switch teams.
BORA-hansgrohe contradicts the transfer in a brief statement: “Cian Uijtdebroeks is and will continue to be an employee of BORA-hansgrohe, also in the upcoming 2024 season. He is contractually bound to us until December 31, 2024,” said team manager Ralph Denk.
Contract termination subject to payment
The German team is demanding a fee of approximately 1 million euros to release Uijtdebroeks. Several sources have confirmed this to WielerFlits. On the side of Visma-Lease a Bike, an offer of one year’s salary as compensation to the German team ‘without obligation and out of collegiality’ has been revealed by a source.
