In an official statement, the organization of the Vuelta a Andalucía confirmed the worst-case scenarios for its 2023 edition. Scheduled to take place over five days, the cycling competition suffered the cancellation of its last two stages, which would take place next weekend, due to “extra-sports events” taking place in the region.
Drastic changes in competition
The changes resulted in a frustratingly shortened competition. After the cancellation of the first two stages, the race is now limited to just one stage, a 4.95 km Time Trial, held in Alcaudete.
This scenario considerably restricts the competition that would traditionally offer five days of challenges through the beautiful landscapes of southern Spain.
The impact of “extra-sporting events”
Although the official statement does not specify the nature of these “extra-sporting events”, the drastic measure highlights the importance of ensuring the safety of participants and everyone involved in the competition.
