After some good finishes in the last Tour Down Under, Biniam Girmay of the Intermarché-Wanty team took victory in the Surf Coast Classic. He beat Elia Viviani (INEOS Grenadiers) and Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) in a sprint after a nearly 100-mile race.
Plan executed perfectly
“Our plan was to control the race from the start and we executed that perfectly. First, letting Simone Petilli dictate the pace of the peloton and then letting Lilian Calmejane close the gap on the fugitives in the last twenty km”, recalls the winner.
“We knew that good positioning at the end with several return points was important. That’s why Tom Paquot, Georg Zimmermann, Dion Smith and Madis Mihkels in the role of leader ensured that I could start the final km on the INEOS Grenadiers wheel. Thanks to that I got my first victory of the season.”
