Despite an impressive performance in the first half of the competition that put him in a comfortable position, Spanish cyclist Oscar Sevilla must withdraw from the race due to several injuries following a fall.
Accident details
Sevilla suffered an accident during the challenging Tunja stage which resulted in the victory of national champion Alejandro Osorio. In the turmoil of the final sprint, Seville ended up falling along with other cyclists. “With still 500 meters remaining, Óscar was involved in an accident with several cyclists, in which he ended up colliding with the barriers”, announced his team, Team Medellín.
Impact on competition
Luckily, as Sevilla’s crash occurred in the last three kilometers of the stage, he didn’t lose many points to his competitors. However, the cyclist dropped to third place overall, losing just eleven seconds, which still kept him in the title race.
But following a medical assessment, it was discovered that Seville suffered fractures to his left collarbone and rib. Additionally, he also had to receive stitches on his face and shoulder. Although surgery was not necessary, these injuries should force Sevilla to withdraw from the competition.
Continuity of Sevilla’s career
This news is especially frustrating considering Sevilla’s age and his continued commitment to cycling. The 47-year-old veteran cyclist had decided to continue his career for another year in high-performance sport, showing impressive endurance and dedication.
