Stage 6 of the Vuelta a España started exactly as predicted by the UAE Team Emirates director earlier in the day. “It will then be a real war, a total war, for the breakaway of the day.”
And that’s what happened. Around 40 cyclists formed a breakaway, which, upon reaching the base of the ascent to the daunting Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre, had a 3 minutes and 45 seconds advantage over the peloton. Everything indicated a new leader for the general classification.
Among those present in the breakaway were Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Oier Lazkano (Movistar), Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), and Lenny Martinez (Groupama – FDJ). Lenny Martinez was only 17 seconds behind the leader Remco Evenepoel in the General Classification.
In the peloton, Primoz Roglic attacks, shattering the group and leaving the leader Remco Evenepoel behind.
With an attack in the breakaway group, Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) wins the 6th stage! Lenny Martinez (Groupama FDJ), only 20 years old, finishes in 2nd place and becomes the new leader of Vuelta a España 2023. In 3rd place, Romain Bardet (Team DSM-Firmenich) concluded the stage.
Among the main contenders in the general classification, the big loser was Remco Evenepoel, who ended up conceding time to practically all the top favorites. The Belgian couldn’t keep up with the attack by Primoz Roglic, which ‘shattered’ the group of leaders.
