“The Jayco AlUla team in this Vuelta lost Filippo Zana and Eddie Dunbar in the fifth stage to Burriana. ‘This is a significant loss,’ said sports director Pieter Weening in a press release.
Dunbar crashed during the neutralized part of this Wednesday, subsequently abandoning the race. Zana (former Italian road champion) was suffering from stomach issues and had to abandon the race halfway through. ‘Dunbar couldn’t pedal anymore after the fall,’ said team doctor Dani Castillo. ‘He fell in the same spot as the team time trial. Fortunately, he didn’t break anything.'”
“With Filippo, initially we were thinking about COVID again, but the test came back negative. It’s a stomach virus. He was completely drained on Wednesday and there was no energy to keep going.”
“Sports director Weening remains determined despite the loss of Dunbar and Zana. ‘Of course, we have to adjust our plans, but we’re still here with a young and eager-to-learn team. This Vuelta certainly isn’t over for us yet,’ concludes the official.”
