The 2023 Vuelta a España has faced heavy rain, nighttime races, neutralizations, and post-finish crashes. Three days of uninterrupted drama and controversy, as well as a major accident, may have been averted as the Spanish police caught someone red-handed who was planning to sabotage the race with 400 liters of oil.
This was revealed on the police’s own social media account. ‘With this mechanism, someone planned to sabotage today’s stage of the Vuelta a España,’ the announcement read. Two containers with 400 liters of liquid that were supposed to be thrown onto the peloton. Four individuals were arrested in Lleida.’
In the shared video, you can see the arrest of several individuals, as well as the scheme that had been planned by the suspects. On a bridge where traffic is visible, the suspects had stored containers presumably filled with oil and a hose pointing directly towards the road below where the peloton would pass today.
