Remco Evenepoel won the third stage with a powerful sprint, but he fell after the finish line when he collided with a woman. Watch the accident:
For a moment, the fall seemed serious, and his bloodied face certainly scared cycling fans, but in the end, the Belgian champion seemed to have been unfazed by the fall.
Still, he wanted to address it in the post-stage interview. “Those people were just fifty meters past the finish line,” was his first reaction. “It’s already the third consecutive day that something happens in the Vuelta. For me, it’s enough!”
Nevertheless, he couldn’t help but be pleased, as Evenepoel won the stage and took over the red jersey from Andrea Piccolo. “It’s good to win here in Andorra. It shows that my preparation is good, and I’m happy with that. I felt very good on the final climb.”
“As a team, we executed the perfect tactics, being patient and waiting. When we caught the breakaway, I wanted to fight for the stage win. I felt that I still had energy in my legs,” Evenepoel concluded.
