Geraint Thomas didn’t have the performance he expected in the Vuelta a España stage on Monday. The British cyclist crossed the finish line in 23rd place, in the town of Arinsal, with a time gap of 47 seconds compared to the stage winner, Remco Evenepoel.
After the race, Thomas commented to Eurosport: “Today, I just wasn’t at my best.” It didn’t go well.”
“During the first few hours, I felt good, but on the final climb, I felt that I couldn’t keep up. I was far behind and had to make all the effort not to be dropped from the peloton.” Thomas ended up losing time when the attacks happened, which pushed him behind the leader Evenepoel in the general classification by 1 minute and 11 seconds.
However, Thomas wasn’t too disheartened, as the experienced British rider knows that the Vuelta a España is still in its early stages and there’s a lot more to come. “Of course, I won’t give up yet. I’ll keep fighting. But this is certainly a day to forget.”
