Matej Mohoric expressed partial disagreement with the strike of cyclists in the final stage of the Renewi Tour, where Mohoric was the winner. The Slovenian cyclist reported disruptions with the timing of the strike: “It would have been better if we were informed before the stage. During the race, there’s not much one can do. We should respect the organization.”
However, during the strike, time bonuses were nullified, and the classification times were registered five miles before the finish line. Mohoric reflected on the situation: “It’s what we have now.” He continued, noting, “This was the crucial day for the classification, but unfortunately, the bonuses were eliminated, which means my position in the ranking remains the same. Still, winning the stage is always rewarding.”
Furthermore, the cyclist wants to emphasize that he supports a safer sport. Mohoric believes this should be achieved through the UCI. “We just need clearer regulations from the UCI regarding safety,” said the Bahrain Victorious athlete.
Other cyclists disagree
Other cyclists later agreed with the strike. Mike Teunissen said, “They have a task here to look for danger. Very narrow paths are often interspersed with very wide roads. They were waiting for things to go wrong. If we hadn’t attacked today, it would have been the same thing again,” he said.
Yves Lampaert also welcomed the movement: “It was very narrow, and I think we did well to neutralize the timing at the dangerous spots. Both the organization and the cyclists are winners.”
