Stage 2 of Vuelta a España 2023 persisted amidst inclement weather conditions, covering a distance of 181km between the towns of Mataró and Barcelona. The rain that persisted for a significant portion of the day compelled the race organizers to neutralize the final 9km of the stage. Only the classification bonuses were upheld.

The stage commenced with the anticipated breakaway. Engaged in this breakaway were Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost), Matteo Sobrero (Team Jayco AlUla), Javier Romo (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Jetse Bol (Burgos-BH), and Joel Nicolau (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA).
Meanwhile, the peloton remained grouped, making efforts to close the gap on the escapees ahead of the designated time-check point. A potential shift in the overall leadership hung in the balance as the riders endeavored to bridge the distance.
As the peloton crossed the time checkpoint (9km from the finish), the primary contenders opted out of contesting the sprint, knowing that the times would remain unchanged from that point onwards. Simultaneously, the breakaway was reeled in, bringing the escapees back into the fold.
What unfolded was a battle among several cyclists keen on securing a victory in a stage of Vuelta a España 2023.
Following a solo attack, Danish rider Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny) clinched the win in Stage 2 of Vuelta a España 2023! In second place was Kaden Groves (Alpecin Deceuninck), and Andrea Vendrame (AG2R Citroën Team) rounded out the podium in third position.
Lorenzo Milesi (Team DSM-Firmenich), who started the stage wearing the leader’s jersey, suffered a fall in the final kilometers and lost ground, relinquishing the red jersey to Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost), who had been part of the breakaway and crossed the 9km marker before the finish line in first place.
