On November 30, 2022, the global cycling community was deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Davide Rebellin. The veteran Italian cyclist was on a routine training ride when he was abruptly struck by a truck, resulting in his death.
Rebellin died at the scene from his injuries. He had retired from cycling just a month prior. The truck driver, a 62-year-old German, immediately left for Germany after the accident. Thanks to a European arrest warrant, he was detained there but was released a few days later.
Based on video analysis and witness statements, the Italian police decided to arrest him again. On Friday morning, he was reportedly arrested at the Brenner Pass, on the border between Austria and Italy.

Davide Rebellin had an impressive list of achievements and particularly excelled in mountainous classics. He won the Fleche Wallonne three times, the Liège-Bastogne-Liège once, and the Amstel Gold Race once. He also claimed the overall victory in the Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico races. In total, he secured 62 professional victories. He concluded his illustrious career at the age of 51.
