The tireless Wout van Aert will embark on his first UCI-level gravel race on Saturday in Houffalize, Belgium. The versatile Jumbo-Visma cyclist will take part in the Houffa Gravel as preparation for the Gravel World Championship scheduled for October 8th in the Italian Veneto region. Last year, Gianni Vermeersch secured the first world title in the discipline tere.
“There are still several major races this season, such as the Tour of Britain and the European Road Championship in Drenthe. The intention is to ultimately compete in the Gravel World Championship. I think it’s useful to have done a race in this discipline beforehand. This is a great opportunity, close to home,” states Van Aert regarding his participation in the race located in the Ardennes region.
“I’ve rested a bit now, so I’m not in my best shape,” continues the 2nd place finisher in the recent World Championship held outside in Glasgow. “But it’s good to test the equipment once and see how it performs in a competition like this. I hope to learn something from the specialists who are at the starting line. It’s good to feel how everything works.”
The UCI World Series race in Houffalize serves as a qualifying opportunity for the World Cup, but Van Aert could likely also rely on a national coach’s nomination for participation in the World Championship. “I race here mainly because I enjoy racing and showcasing myself to my fans and the audience. I’m looking forward to the last part of my season, with some fun and new races.”
