Russian cyclist Aleksandr Vlasov stated that, even with the arrival of Primoz Roglic to the BORA – hansgrohe team, he does not yet consider himself in the support position.
“We will see who is in better shape and adjust accordingly,” Vlasov told Bici.Pro in relation to his work with the Slovenian in the upcoming Paris-Nice. Vlasov does not wish to relegate himself to just a domestique role with his new teammate, and that includes the Tour de France´´.
“This year we will also go to the Tour with all the best, such as Visma-Lease a Bike and UAE Team Emirates, who will bring up to five captains. But that doesn’t mean that I’ll start pushing for Roglic from the first kilometer and leave the ranking immediately. First we need to see how the race develops.”
Vlasov seeks his space
Known for his consistency in stage races in recent years, Vlasov stands out as one of the leaders of the German team. This year, however, everything should change, with Red Bull joining the team and the hiring of Primoz Roglic, with the direct objective of winning the Tour de France.
“I had a good winter. I’ve never been sick, I’ve never missed training and I see that as an advantage. I worked well and I’m getting closer to my goals.”
“In a month we have Paris-Nice, then Catalunya, which are very interesting. And then we will leave for Flèche Wallone and Liège-Bastogne-Liège”, says Vlasov about his planning for spring.
Optimistic for the new season
In the first few weeks of the season, the 27-year-old athlete did not finish on the podium in all the races he started: Trofeo Calvia; Serra de Tramontana Trophy; Pollença Trophy and Tour of the Valencian Community.
“I’m growing little by little and I think it’s good, it’s better than having a sensational year and then disappearing. In reality, I still don’t know what my limits are and running alongside Roglic will be an advantage”, he believes.
“Seeing how an athlete like that trains and races will be an inspiration, the Tour will be an excellent school. In the meantime, I can follow my goals. Next up is Paris-Nice. Morale has grown and the goals are higher, we think like a top team”, concludes Vlasov.
