Groupama-FDJ cyclist Kévin Geniets won the Grand Prix La Marseillaise. Geniets was fastest in a two-man sprint at the end of the first French race of the year, taking his first professional victory outside the national championships.
The race
The French race began with a five-runner escape consisting of Théo Delacroix, Alex Colman, Hugo Toumire, Jean-Louis Le Ny and Jelle Vermoote. Not a threatening group, the peloton managed to keep them under control before the day’s action began in the final kilometers.
The decision
Race favorites Milan Menten and Stefano Oldani were among those involved in a major accident that occurred 40 kilometers from the finish.
The platoon, still numerous, dispersed after facing the Route des Crêtes. Rémy Rochas made a strong effort to launch Groupama-FDJ teammate Kévin Geniets up the toughest climb of the day, with Alex Baudin accompanying him. The pair stood out from the field, with the back of the race being completely fragmented.
Geniets started the sprint at the front and, despite being ahead, he had too much speed for Baudin in the final straight and took a spectacular victory in the center of Marseille. Kévin Vauquelin took third place just behind.
