Giro d’Italia stage-winning cyclist in 2021 announces retirement, after ending search for new team

Joe Dombrowski’s career has come to an end. At 32 years old, the American was unable to renew his contract with Astana Qazaqstan and, consequently, began the search for a new team, but without success.

At the end of last year, Joe Dombrowski was still optimistic about his future, however, the climber has decided to end his career now. In an interview, he meticulously recalls the details of his career.

Great teams in history

Dombrowski made his professional debut more than ten years ago, in 2013, with Team Sky. The cyclist soon competed for Cannondale-Garmin, UAE Team Emirates and Astana Qazaqstan Team. Dombrowski switched to the pros with very good credentials: he won the Giro d’Italia on promise in 2012. He was expected to have a great future as a Grand Tour cyclist, but this never materialized.

Fourteen Grand Tours

“I consider myself, eleven years and fourteen Grand Tours later, fortunate to have been able to experience this incredible journey, it was my childhood dream.”

“As a professional, your day to day is very structured, through training blocks, training camps and competition days. In fact, I am only now looking at it from a different point of view, and therefore only now can I find the words to understand the context.”

Career satisfaction

“I had the honor of racing alongside some cycling legends. I learned what it’s like to live in a foreign country and speak another language. I made friends with people from all over the world. Cycling gave me a unique perspective. I received an education that I wouldn’t miss for anything.”

“You don’t build a career alone. There are many people I would like to thank for this. Thank you to everyone who participated in this wild journey”, concluded the American.
