Caleb Ewan secured victory in his first appearance with Jayco AlUla at the Australian Criterium Championship. The 29-year-old cyclist kicked off his campaign successfully, and based on his initial performance, he will have full support and confidence in his new team.
“Caleb returned to the team, and it doesn’t even seem like he was absent,” said Jayco AlUla’s Director of High Performance and Racing, Matthew White, to the British website GCN. “It was good to see him in action in the Criterium, and we look forward to seeing him in the WorldTour soon.”
Home race boosts confidence for the team
“Sprinting is a matter of confidence, and it’s an advantage to have been able to do some races before the Tour Down Under. He will have Kelland O’Brien and Campbell Stewart as key players. They already have that form and intensity. Both are eager to support one of the best sprinters in the world,” White continues.
Tour Down Under initial target
Ewan will focus on the sprint stages of the Tour Down Under, which will take place from January 16 to 21. It’s a race that White has won several times as a sports director, and he believes Ewan is approaching the first WorldTour event of the 2024 season in the best possible way.
“Caleb has been competing for a long time, but he’s only 29. I think he wants to show the world that he’s at the peak of his career. The best way to do that is to win on the biggest stage (World Tour),” concludes Matthew White.
