Mathieu van der Poel secured his seventh consecutive victory at the Hulst World Cup this Saturday. However, not everyone along the course enjoyed the individual performance of the world champion.
A group of unsportsmanlike spectators booed Van der Poel at each pass. Initially, Van der Poel didn’t seem to mind much in recent races, but at a certain point, he lost control and spat at some ‘fans’. “It was a lot of booing, and I finished with it,” he said in a quick interview.
Boos already during the warm-up.
“Boos were happening even during the warm-up. It’s better to stay at home. I’m fed up with all the booing,” said MVDP. What were the spectators shouting? “It’s better to ask them yourself. I won’t repeat that. They weren’t things that belong to sports; booing is not appropriate for anyone.”
Van der Poel doesn’t think he will regret his reaction. “After a while, it was enough, even for me.”
