UCI expected to change protocol for races in high temperatures

The UCI will expand the Extreme Weather Protocol with a special protocol for extremely high temperatures. As UCI Medical Director, Professor Xavier Bigard presented his proposal to all stakeholders during a recent conference on the WorldTour and Women’s WorldTour. The UCI Management Committee will vote in early 2024.

High-temperature protocol set to be modified
The so-called ‘High-Temperature Protocol’ represents an extension of the current Extreme Weather Protocol, present in the cycling scene since 2015 and covering various weather conditions. In light of recent developments in climate change, the UCI aims to refine the definition of this protocol, especially in situations of extreme heat.

Changes in starts and more water among the measures

Among the possible measures, the possibility of relocating the starting area to a more shaded area, providing cold drinks and additional ice to teams during the race, increasing the presence of water-carrying motorcycles in the race, adjusting the start time, or neutralizing specific parts of the race stands out. It is important to note that these recommendations are suggested by the UCI, with the responsibility for the decision always attributed to the relevant working group.

The approval of the High-Temperature Protocol will be submitted for review during the next meeting of the UCI Management Committee, scheduled to take place between January 31 and February 2 in the Czech Republic, coinciding with the period of the Cyclocross World Championships.
