A 2024 Vuelta a España is expected to feature a stage with 4,000 meters of ascent and finish on a mountain conquered by Primoz Roglic in 2023

The details regarding the route and profiles of La Vuelta a España 2024 will be revealed on December 19, Tuesday. Despite the anticipation for a few more days, there are already rumors, with the latest one suggesting the return of the ascent of Coloso Picon Blanco.

With its 25 kilometers in length, Picon Blanco poses a significant challenge, especially in its last 8 kilometers, with an average gradient of 9.1% and several sections reaching up to 18% gradient, likely to impact the positions in the general classification.

This section, known for being a demanding and consistent climb in the Vuelta a Burgos, where Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) triumphed this year, hints at the possible participation of the cyclist in the 2024 edition of the Vuelta a España.

Stage expected in the 2nd or 3rd week

According to the Diario de Burgos, La Vuelta a España 2024 will visit the region during the second or third week of the race for a highly mountainous day, featuring over 4,000 meters of altitude gain, starting in Villarcayo and finishing at the summit of Picon Blanco.

Remco Evenepoel triumphed at Picón Blanco.

The last time the ascent was featured in the Vuelta a España was in 2021. On that day, the stage winner was Rein Taaramäe. The Estonian from the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux team (currently Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) triumphed in the breakaway and won the 3rd stage of the 76th edition. This victory also allowed him to wear the red jersey for 2 days.
