Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale announced the signing of Sam Bennett after a two-year stint with BORA-hansgrohe, coming from Quick-Step, where he experienced his best moments. In an interview with the British website GCN, the Irishman reveals his expectations for the 2024 season.
A fresh start with a new team
The Irishman began by discussing his arrival at Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale and the reasons behind the change.
“I needed a new start and required a team where I had a good opportunity, along with strong support and excellent bikes. Maybe I need a bit more French, but I’m excited.”
“My contact with the team was through Irish coach Stephen Barrett. I also spoke with the bike manufacturer, and I know I’m on one of the best bikes in the world with Specialized, but I talked to the folks at Van Rysel and got excited about their new project.”
A potential merger between Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step sped up Bennett’s contract.
Bennett reveals that the merger (which ultimately didn’t happen) accelerated his signing. “I think it was over the weekend (the contract signing) that the story about the potential Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step merger came up. I signed a bit before and thought ‘thank God’ because there would be some good sprinters on the market. We started talking around July or August.”
Melancholic departure from BORA-hansgrohe
The Irishman admits that his departure from the German team Bora-hansgrohe could have been in a better situation. “There are no hard feelings between me and Bora; I did my best in the last two years. We just couldn’t make it work, unfortunately.”
Question: Being away from the Tour de France for a few years, do you feel like you have something to prove to people?
Answer: “I have a burden on my shoulders. I have to prove to myself and to others that I still have the ability to win. I don’t want to be seen as one of those sprinters who left Quick-Step and couldn’t win anymore. There’s still so much I need to take from my career, and I’m not satisfied yet.”
Question: What would be a perfect 2024 for you?
Answer: “Ten victories and a stage win in the Tour de France. My minimum goal every year is ten victories, and I’ve been falling short for a few years now, but that’s the aim. It would be great to start early and win a French race, but I think I need a bit more time to prepare for the season. I need a solid foundation before I start racing.”
