Since that unfortunate day in 2019 at the Dauphiné, Chris Froome’s sporting life has changed radically. The accident he was involved in during training forced him into a long period of rehabilitation, and upon returning to the group, he couldn’t replicate his best performances in the World Tour. In an interview with Cyclingpro, the British cyclist reveals that the major sequelae from the fall seem to have disappeared.
Froome feels 5 years younger
“I left the Tour of Hainan with very high morale, despite some health problems at the beginning. As the days went by, I started feeling better and better, and I can say that I feel five years younger. I wanted to escape, felt brilliant and completely rejuvenated. This gave me more motivation to think about 2024 and how to approach the upcoming season. I have no expectations, but at the same time, I would like to be back in the top positions in the final stages of the race.”
Back problems seem to be a thing of the past
“I had a lot of back problems this year, and it turns out they occurred because of the position I was in on the bike. I consulted a specialist, and we tried to get closer to the position I had during my time with Team Sky. In fact, there was a significant difference between what I did back then and how I felt in the saddle recently. So, we made some significant changes, and now I feel much better, to the point that the back pain has passed.”
Outlook for 2024
“Now I want to be able to bring out the best in me and know that when I retire, I won’t have anything to regret, whether it means winning or helping my teammates, it will be fine either way. I can only control my level of performance and preparation, and if I’m in a position to be chosen for the next Tour, I’ll do everything I can.”
