Evolving in the shadow of his younger brother Mathieu, David van der Poel is ending his professional cycling career. The 31-year-old Dutchman has been racing for the Alpecin-Deceuninck team for years, although he was demoted to the development team this year due to poor results. “DVDP” is, like his brother, a multi-discipline cyclist, as he has competed in Road, Cyclocross, Mountain Bike, and, more recently, Gravel.
Reason for retirement
Why am I stopping now? First of all, because I reached the end of my contract with the team,” explains van der Poel to the Dutch press, as reported by WielerFlits. “We sat down together to see how the team saw it, how I saw it. So, one or two months ago, we decided it was best to end it.”
“I haven’t realized it yet, that will only happen in a few days or weeks because I’ve thought so little about it. I have no idea what I’m going to do now. I’d rather rest for a while first and then see what happens to me,” concludes the Dutchman.
