Jonathan Milan had been without a victory for a while before the start of the Tour of Guangxi. The 23-year-old young sprinter had a strong start to the season, winning a stage and taking the points classification jersey in the Giro d’Italia earlier in the year, but he only managed to regain victory today. “The sprint unfolded perfectly for me,” said the stage winner.
The stage was characterized by a breakaway, consisting of Dries de Bondt (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Thomas Champion (Cofidis), Jens Reynders (Israel – Premier Tech), and Julius Johansen (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty).
After the final intermediate sprint, only Johansen and Reynders continued to push the pace and were caught with 7 kilometers to go. Then, there was almost a surprise when several riders attacked and gained a significant advantage, which seemed to spell the end for the sprinters’ chances.
However, the collaboration among the breakaway riders was not perfect, and they were caught just a few kilometers from the finish. This led to a very fast and flat sprint, with Jonathan Milan being the fastest, securing a dominant and impressive victory that also earned him the overall race lead. He defeated Arvid de Kleijn and Juan Sebastián Molano at the finish line.
