Giro dell’Emilia 2023: Primoz Roglic beats Tadej Pogacar and wins the Italian classic; watch the finish

The Giro dell’Emilia 2023 once again proved to be one of the most contested and interesting races on the professional cycling calendar. The Italian classic, covering 204km, started in Carpi and featured its iconic finish at the Basilica of San Luca in Bologna.

After the start, a group of 6 riders formed a breakaway. This group included Emanuele Ansaloni (Team Technipes-in Emilia Romagna), Floris de Tier (Bingoal WB), Jacopo Mosca (Lidl-Trek), BOGNA Alex (Alpecin Deceuninck), BAIS Mattia (EOLO-Kometa), and Christian Scaroni (Astana Qazaqstan Team).

In the main peloton, UAE Team Emirates controlled the race, setting a strong pace. With 40 km to go, the breakaway was caught, and the stage was set for the 5 climbs to the Basilica of San Luca.

In the final lap of the challenging circuit, the peloton had been reduced to just 9 riders. Only the captains of the top teams remained. At this point, UAE Team Emirates was the only team with a rider to support their captain, Tadej Pogacar. Adam Yates took the lead and worked for his captain in the remaining 9 km of the Italian classic.

With a powerful attack, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) left no chance for Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) to catch his wheel and won the Giro dell’Emilia 2023, securing the top spot. His compatriot finished in 2nd place, with Simon Yates (Team Jayco AlUla) taking the third position.
