Gorka Izagirre will reunite with his brother Ion Izagirre in 2024. Cofidis has announced the signing of Gorka, aged 35, from Movistar, which means the brothers will race together again next year. Gorka Izagirre will join the French team alongside team leader Guillaume Martin.
“He will be very important for the team and our young riders,” says coach Cédric Vasseur. “Gorka and Ion have always shone when they’ve had the opportunity to ride on the same team. […] Gorka will be valuable to Guillaume Martin in stage races and one-day races. He is professional and always motivated.”
It’s a personal challenge for Izagirre. “The feeling within the team and with the staff is very good. For me, it’s a new team, a new country, and a new language, but I’ll do everything I can to adapt. Ion has only said good things about the team. My goal will be to assist the leaders and do everything I can to achieve as many victories as possible.”
Certainly, it’s not the first year that Gorka and Ion Izagirre have raced on the same team. This has happened previously with the Basque team Euskatel-Euskadi (2010-2013), at Movistar (2014-2017, 2022-2023), Bahrain Merida (2018), and also at Astana (2019-2021).
