The shocking images of a bloodied Küng at the finish line in Emmen are still fresh in the minds of those who watched on TV or were in the Netherlands. In addition to the visible cuts, he suffered two hand fractures, a facial fissure, and consequently, a mild concussion during the collision with the barriers. Despite his helmet being severely damaged, Küng crossed the finish line and was later examined and taken to the hospital.
Since 2021, the UCI has implemented a protocol in case of suspected or actual concussion. Cyclists must undergo an initial assessment to identify potential concussions, especially if their helmet is damaged or they experience a severe fall.
The UCI is seeking information from the Swiss Cycling Federation to determine if this protocol was followed, according to the Danish source Ekstra Bladet. If confirmed, there is a strong possibility that Küng should not have been allowed to continue competing after the accident. This could lead to consequences if the correct guidelines related to the concussion protocol were not followed.
