Filippo Ganna won’t be at the start of the European Time Trial Championship on Wednesday. The time trial specialist will instead be present in the road race next Sunday. This became evident after the announcement of the Italian national team selection.
With his recent victory in the time trial on the 10th stage of the Vuelta, Ganna seemed to be the clear favorite for the European time trial title. However, when national coach Daniele Bennati announced the selection, surprisingly, Ganna was not on the list.
The coach had chosen Mattia Cattaneo and Matteo Sobrero for the competition. Both specialists finished second and third, respectively, behind Ganna in the Italian Time Trial Championship.
Road Race on Ganna’s Schedule
Ganna has chosen to participate in the European Road Championship scheduled for Sunday (24.09). According to Bennati, Ganna will share the leadership with Matteo Trentin.
In the last Vuelta a España, Ganna impressed not only by winning the time trial but also by finishing second three times in stages contested by sprinters. In the final stage in Madrid, the INEOS Grenadiers cyclist was also very active in the breakaway with Evenepoel and Groves, among others, and ended up finishing in second place.
