In a stage where success for the breakaway was anticipated, that didn’t materialize. There was indeed a breakaway with 5 cyclists. However, Jumbo-Visma set a very strong pace, preventing the escapees from opening up a sufficient gap to win the race.
So, at the base of the final ascent to Bejes, the peloton caught up with the escapees and headed for the decisive moment.
During the final ascent, with just over 3km to go before the finish, when the peloton was compact, a powerful attack by Jonas Vingegaard!!! This attack allowed the Danish rider to open up a sufficient gap and secure the victory, making it impossible for him to be caught.
In the 2nd position, Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates) crossed the finish line, while Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) secured the 3rd position. Both managed to break away from the peloton with a late attack in the final meters of the stage.
With this result, Jonas Vingegaard takes over the second place in the Vuelta a España 2023.
