Wout van Aert won the 5th stage of the Tour of Britain on Thursday. The Jumbo-Visma cyclist took advantage of an opening provided by Olav Kooij in the final moments of the stage and crossed the finish line alone in Felixstowe.
The stage unfolded entirely according to Jumbo Visma’s plan on Thursday. An early breakaway stayed ahead of the peloton for some time with a lead of about two minutes, but it was controlled by Jumbo Visma’s riders, Jos van Emden and Steven Kruijswijk, at the front of the peloton.
In the last kilometer, Van Aert dove into the final corner with Kooij ceasing to pedal, and Van Aert suddenly opened up a gap.
The Belgian would finish three seconds ahead of the peloton after a considerable effort and would take over the leader’s jersey from his 21-year-old teammate. Ethan Vernon and Danny van Poppel finished second and third, respectively.
