The last stage before the first rest day provided a challenging day for participants in the Vuelta a España. During the course, cyclists had to contend with strong crosswinds that split the main peloton multiple times. Additionally, the peloton maintained an average speed of over 51 km/h in the first hour of the stage.
Thus, the stage was designed to be the typical “In this stage, you don’t win the race, but you can lose it.”
A breakaway characterized the stage’s opening. This breakaway built a lead of over 9 minutes ahead of the peloton and seemed to be heading for the stage victory. In the breakaway were Jon Barrenetxea, Daniel Navarro, Chris Hamilton, Rubén Fernandez, Matteo Sobrero, Jonathan Caicedo, Lennard Kämna, and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier.
Due to the amount of mud at the finish (as previously reported by Giro do Ciclismo), the management of the Vuelta a España changed the finish location (bringing it forward by more than 2km) and canceled the time bonuses. Please see below:
And João Almeida attacks!! The Portuguese rider manages to reduce the time gap to the leaders with a late-stage attack.
And Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) wins the stage!! In second place is Matteo Sobrero (Team Jayco AlUla), with Chris Hamilton (Team DSM-Firmenich) taking the third spot on the podium.
Due to the complete change in finish locations and time bonuses, the organization of the Vuelta a España had significant difficulties in posting the results. Therefore, we will be constantly updating the results.
Note: The results below were provided in this format by the Vuelta organization. Therefore, we emphasize verifying the stage times (for example, João Almeida is currently 3 minutes and 11 seconds behind the leader, Aleksandr Vlasov, and not in 26th place, as it appears).
