The cycling world is in mourning for the death of Mark Groeneveld. The 20-year-old Dutchman, who raced for the Canadian Continental cycling team XSpeed United, collapsed on Sunday night, likely due to a heart attack.
Groeneveld had competed in Hong Kong on the previous Sunday. The young Dutchman was at the start of the Hong Kong Cyclothon, a UCI 1.1-level road race. Groeneveld withdrew from the race early due to equipment failure. His team, XSpeed United, stated that his death was not related to the competition.
On the night of Sunday to Monday, Groeneveld collapsed, likely due to a heart attack. The police and ambulance team on the scene were unable to save him. An autopsy is expected to clarify the cause of Groeneveld’s death.
