The 2014 Tour de France, the 101st edition of the renowned cycling competition, unfolded across 21 stages from July 5th to July 27th, covering a total distance of 3,664 kilometers (2,276 miles).
Italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali secured his first Tour de France victory, showcasing expertise in both climbing and descending. This marked Italy’s return to the top of the podium after a 16-year gap since Marco Pantani’s win in 1998.
Nibali’s triumph made him the sixth cyclist in history to achieve the “triple crown”, having won at least one edition of each of the three Grand Tours (Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España). Previous cyclists accomplishing this feat were Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Alberto Contador. Chris Froome would also achieve this milestone in 2018.
The 2014 podium featured two French cyclists: Jean-Christophe Péraud, a former mountain biker, secured second place, while climber Thibaut Pinot finished third and also claimed the best young rider award.
