Tom Pidcock took a break from his cyclocross season two and a half weeks ago in Benidorm to focus fully on the road. The Brit headed to Spain to prepare and in his most recent training, this Tuesday he broke Juan Ayuso’s record, but quickly removed the file from Strava.
Pidcock sets impressive time at Coll de Rates
Coll de Rates is known as the training hill in the Spanish region of Alicante and Valencia, where many cycling teams set up shop during this time of year. Pidcock, who will compete in another mountain bike race this weekend in La Nucia, set a time of 12 minutes and 31 seconds on the 6.5km climb with an average of just over 5%.
He did so eighteen seconds faster than Juan Ayuso of UAE-Team Emirates, regaining the Strava record. Pidcock removed his effort quickly, but many fans had already noticed the INEOS Grenadiers rider’s explosive time.

Coll de Rates is used as a reference for training
The times in the Coll de Rates are generally used as a reference. Jonas Vingegaard, from the ColoQuick continental team, impressed in 2018 with a record time, which caught the attention of the then Jumbo-Visma team.
Pidcock will begin his road season on February 14 at the Volta ao Algarve, followed by the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. This will be the only cobblestone classic for the INEOS leader, whose main objective is the Tour de France and the Olympic Games.
He will also take part in the Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour of the Basque Country, Flèche Wallone and Liège-Bastogne-Liège during his spring season.
