The Critérium International was a two-day cycling competition held annually in the spring in France from 1932 to 2016. Previously, it was known as the Critérium National de la Route, debuting in 1932. For many years, it served as a kind of French national championship, and it wasn’t until 1979 that it was opened to cyclists of other nationalities.
Bernard Hinault is the only cyclist to win in both versions of the race, in 1978 and 1981. The race was won by some of the most renowned cyclists in the world, including Jacques Anquetil, Sean Kelly, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Induráin, Stephen Roche, Joop Zoetemelk, Laurent Fignon, Jens Voigt, Cadel Evans, and Chris Froome.
Horse invades the track in 1997.
In 1997, during the 2nd stage of the race, a horse jumped a fence and joined the group of cyclists, managing to overtake them, leaving the race just 20 km from the finish. This sequence was quickly featured in the movie “Amélie” and is often mistaken as a scene in the Tour de France. This stage was ultimately won by the Spanish rider Marcelino Garcia, who beat Laurent Jalabert in the sprint. Frenchman Pascal Lino finished third.
