In a conversation with Matt Stephens from Sigma Sports Café Ride, Pogacar discusses his racing style. “Fans want a show. Nowadays, you have social media, and everything is on the internet. Cyclists feel that fans want something more. Sometimes I don’t even think about the result, but if it’s fun for people sitting on the couch watching TV.”
Tour of Flanders
Pogacar states that the enthusiasm of Belgian fans serves as motivation. Despite fans supporting local idols like Wout Van Aert, Pogacar doesn’t hide that his adrenaline rises alongside the iconic climbs of the “Ronde van Vlaanderen.”
“Yes, I race with adrenaline. Especially in the Tour of Flanders. I was booed at the Paterberg, but fortunately, not too much. Sometimes it’s okay, but if it goes too far, you no longer race with adrenaline.”
Unforgettable Victories
He finds it difficult to choose his most unforgettable victory, but the Tour of Flanders is mentioned again. “All victories are special to me, but the Tour of Flanders still stands out. And the long solo flight at Il Lombardia. Mostly because of the cramps.”
“I panicked. I thought: I can go downhill like this, but climbing with cramps… that would be impossible. Fortunately, I got a drink with salt and vinegar, I think with cucumber. I got a little sick and dehydrated because I don’t usually get cramps.”
