Lluís Mas, 34, who represented the Movistar Team for the last five seasons, has opted for a drastic change in his career. He has chosen to return to the track, a discipline in which he gained experience during his training, although he plans to combine it with road competitions, as reported by the Spanish newspaper ‘Ultima Hora.’
In this regard, the new UCI Continental team, Illes Balears Arabay Cycling, will be crucial in his future. In addition to taking on responsibilities in sports management, Lluís Mas may even compete with the team in some high-level competitions, as a complement to track races, which will become his priority starting in the 2024 academic year.
Support from the Spanish coach was decisive.
The backing of the national track cycling team coach, Félix García Casas, was crucial in Mas’s choice, although he has the task of gaining the coach’s trust to be reinstated in the Spanish national team. ‘The idea is to combine them, but I am motivated to return to the track,’ Lluís said.
He recalls, ‘I had several offers available, but I was looking for something that really excited me, and I believe this is the path,’ added the cyclist, who has accumulated fifteen seasons as a professional since his debut in 2009 with the Burgos team (2009-2013), followed by his time with Caja Rural-Seguros RGA (2014-18) before joining Movistar in 2019, where he remained until 2023.
Satisfaction with his completed career.
‘I think I achieved everything I wanted as a cyclist. I’ve raced in the Vuelta, Giro… all five ‘Monuments,’ World Championships, Mediterranean Games, won national medals, have victories… Now I’ve earned the right to choose, and I hope to enjoy this new stage as a cyclist,’ concluded the recent bronze medalist at the Spanish Time Trial Championship.
