Remco Evenepoel, the national champion of Belgium, started the year 2024 in the best possible way, achieving an impressive victory in the Figueira Champions Classic, after a 55 kilometer solo flight, Remco confirmed his favoritism in the competition.
“The attack was an inspiration of the moment because I realized I had fewer and fewer teammates around me,” Evenepoel said. He highlighted that the decisive attack was solid and that he felt good during the race, considering this a good start to the season.
Confusion during interview
The conversation with Evenepoel, who was called to the podium four times, was briefly interrupted by an insistent press officer in Portugal. After a short dispute over whether questions in Dutch were allowed, the winner of the day resumed the conversation.
“This attack? Yes, everything was under control from the beginning. When I started the climb I saw that I had a good distance, so that’s a good sign. It was a good point to attack too. I think everyone thought I would attack at this point of incline, but….”
“Yes, it was an inspiration of the moment. I don’t know (laughs). It was a very difficult part. A few seconds earlier, I had looked back and seen some gaps appearing in the peloton. It was the right time to leave.”
