Oier Lazkano (Movistar Team) brilliantly won the Clásica Jaén. The Spanish champion participated in the initial escape, attacked with Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon AG2R) and continued alone on the last part of the dirt road. Bastien Tronchon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) was second and Jan Tratnik (Visma-Lease a Bike) was third.
Escape of the day
To test, as expected you had a numerous initial leak. They were Tim Wellens, Alessandro Covi, Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates), Jan Tratnik, Per Strand Hagenes (Visma-Lease a Bike), Ben Turner (INEOS Grenadiers), Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar), Nicolas Prodhomme and Jordan Labrosse (G2R World Decathlon), Jefferson Alveira Cepeda (Rural Box), Gianluca Brambilla, Filippo Conca (Q36.5), Eric Antonio Fagundez (Burgos-BH) and Alex Molenaar (Balearic Islands Arabay Cycling).
However, the escape could not work together and Arrieta, Lazkano, Cepeda, Prodhomme and Molenaar attacked.
In the peloton, the Visma-Lease a Bike set the pace, undoubtedly for Wout van Aert. The Dutch team was well represented in the front group with two cyclists (Tratnik and Strand Hagenes), but today the team was betting on Wout Van Aert.
Wout van Aert with tire puncture
On the first gravel track, Wout Van Aert was forced to change wheels with his teammate Per Strand Hagenes, which meant that the Belgian could no longer catch up with the trailing group.
Escape is reduced to 2 cyclists
And then we headed to the next unpaved section, which after Oier Lazkano’s attack was reduced to just 2 cyclists, as only Nicolas Prodhomme managed to keep up with the Spanish Champion.
With 22 km to go before the finish line, Oier Laskano leaves his trailing companion behind and takes a solo flight to the finish line.
The peloton at this point is all broken up into small groups and cannot catch up with Laskano who crosses the finish line alone.
