Michael Schär will take on the role of Sports Director for the Lidl-Trek team next year. The 37-year-old Swiss cyclist concluded his professional career at AG2R Citroën this season. Schär expressed his appreciation for the team’s philosophy, highlighting his passion for this new role.
“It’s rewarding to make the transition to a team leader role. After eighteen years competing as a professional in the WorldTour, I feel it’s the right time to shift to this new challenge. I’m looking forward to this change,” said the former cyclist in Lidl-Trek’s official statement.
The decision to join Lidl-Trek came after a conversation with General Manager Luca Guercilena. The relationship between the two has existed for some time, as they previously worked together on the Swiss team, with Schär as a cyclist and Guercilena as a coach.
Schär emphasized his admiration for how Luca treated and motivated him during the Olympics, where he had an exceptional performance. “The way Luca supported and motivated us at the Olympics made me deeply appreciative. It was there that I delivered my best performance,” he noted.
