Andrea Bagioli secured victory in the 107th edition of the Gran Piemonte, in what could be his last win with Soudal Quick-Step. The Italian has already been confirmed as a new addition to Lidl-Trek for 2024.
In the final warm-up race for Il Lombardia and even the last race of their careers for some in the peloton, many cyclists took to the starting line with high hopes.
A breakaway characterized the race for most of its course, featuring Portuguese rider Rui Costa, Davide Formolo, Harold Tejada, and Jacopo Mosca.
The breakaway was caught by the chasing group with 17 km to go, leading to multiple attacks. An attack with Guillaume Martin, Andrea Bagioli, Marc Hirschi, and Alex Aranburu with 9 km remaining was not caught by the peloton.
As a result, these four cyclists ended up sprinting for the victory, with Andrea Bagioli (Soudal Quick-Step) emerging as the winner. Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) finished in 2nd place, and Alex Aranburu (Movistar Team) claimed the 3rd spot on the podium.
Portuguese rider Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), who has shown good form since his victory in the Vuelta a España, continued to impress and finished the race in a solid 6th place.
