The 20-year-old Mexican cyclist, Isaac Del Toro, surprised everyone by finishing in fourth place in his first Time Trial as a professional, in the Volta ao Algarve, beating names like Filippo Ganna and Wout van Aert.
“Yes, I’m surprised, it was my first time among the professionals and I’m obviously very pleased. Initially, it was difficult to find my position on the bike, but then I loosened up and things went better,” Del Toro shared with SpazioCiclismo.
“Maybe I would have preferred a flat start, but things still went well.”
Del Toro has an impressive start to the season
In recent months, Del Toro had already impressed, so it was difficult to argue that there could be surprises, but in some ways yesterday’s performance in the Algarve was a real shock.
Del Toro managed fourth place of the day, just 37 seconds behind Remco Evenepoel; getting ahead of great time trialists such as Filippo Ganna, Wout van Aert and Stefan Bissegger.
“There was great competition, with some big names, so it’s good and motivating to be among them. This is the most important time trial I’ve participated in so far and I’m happy it went so well,” he admits.
“I’m still in the process of understanding and learning, these are new experiences for me and so far I’m making the most of them.”
A complicated night for Del Toro
However, not everything was rosy. According to the race organizers, Del Toro had a “difficult night” and will not participate in the last day of the competition.
