The UCI (International Cycling Union) announced that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected the appeal of the Russian team Gazprom – RusVelo against the UCI to return to competitions. The International Cycling Union released the decision in a statement.
“On March 1, 2022, the UCI took a series of measures in response to the military aggression in Ukrainian territory for which the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus are responsible.
Among the list of measures, two of them directly affected the Gazprom-RusVelo team, which was registered as a UCI ProTeam at the time. The UCI registration for all teams of Russian and Belarusian nationality, including Gazprom-RusVelo, was withdrawn, and the sponsorship of Russian and Belarusian brands or products was declared contrary to UCI regulation 1.1.089 and, therefore, prohibited in any case on the UCI international calendar.
The team’s paying agent, Provelo AG, appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on March 22, 2023, which has now issued its ruling, fully rejecting the claims of the paying agent.
The UCI welcomes this decision, which supports the firm position taken by the UCI in response to the military aggression in Ukraine.”
